We all know acceptance is an inside job; the reality is that our environment plays a huge role in how we view ourselves and in balancing the accommodations and restrictions we face. For me, the goal is to exist in an environment that understands our diversity, and accepts, accommodates and celebrates this.

Inspired by the National Autistic Society's call for creative works around acceptance I wrote this poem. I'm a therapist, clearly not a writer, but I have always found peace in transferring my thoughts from mind to page.

This training was excellent and I would highly recommend it to anyone who works in the assessment or post-diagnostic support field with neurodivergent individuals.

I love an assessment that gives me great data, helps me to understand the client better and that my colleagues are also familiar with. However, I recognise people are complex, there isn't going to be a 'best fit' for everyone and one of the joys of being in independent practice is supplementing established tools with my own ideas!

I really enjoy being creative and 'hands on' and have loved developing my own work books, sensory grab bags and activity items.

Sharing the random thought that occurred to me a few weeks ago, most of the neurodivergent people I know are in a constant state of risk analysis. This is truly exhausting!

They might be 'told off' for jumping to the worst-case scenario or for catastrophic thinking, but I prefer to think of it as a combination of strengths working together to try and keep that person safe.

Theories of neuroplasticity tell us that person-directed change is possible, so with that in mind, I'd love to hear .....

This is such a large factor in addressing sensory differences, mental health difficulties or barriers to neurodivergent individuals engaging in meaningful occupations.

It will impact intervention planning, support strategies and psychoeducation, as what works in school may not be suitable at home, or at horse riding practice.

A quick search pulled some disappointing but unsurprising statistics. Although employers are beginning to recognise the unique strengths of neurodivergent employees, significant barriers still exist to gaining and maintaining employment, with neurodivergent individuals being more likely to experience burnout.

Each of us can make small changes to ensure our workplaces feel safer and more inclusive so that hopefully, next year’s search results will be different.

While I am always learning, and currently part way through an ACT for Neurodivergent adults course, I am pleased that my Master's level study is finished!

I knew before I became an OT that I wanted to study sensory processing and how it impacted Autistic individuals. I was personally motivated by the lack of provision available for my young daughter and credit her, in part, for the amazing career I have today.

Growing up in Liverpool, a trip to Southport was a treat; footprints on the beach, candyfloss around your cheeks, but I don’t know how to think about this place now without imagining the horrors of this attack.
